Think of your web site as a good handshake.  An effective web site should be strong, inviting  and say a lot about you in an instant.  When you shake hands with the world on the Internet, you want to make a good first impression.  But to make a lasting impression, you need to focus on content.  In other words, your web site is your ambassador to the world.

Your web site is a communications tool.  It's part of a comprehensive marketing plan, and should be approached using the same communication principles that apply to a flyer, TV commercial or print ad.  Aim to create a site that will grab your audience's attention, entice them to stick around, and keep them coming back for more.

Fancy graphics, shockwave effects and sound bytes can dress up a site, but nothing will disguise bad content.  If your web site isn't easy to read, easy to navigate and interesting, it's not going to be effective.
